Strengthening
our Economy by Building Green Businesses
One of the basic
foundations of the Green Memo is that the city does not have
to make a choice between economic prosperity and
environmental protection. In fact, the opposite is true - -
responsible environmental policy can strengthen our economy
while improving our quality of life.
This is why the City
is expressly reaching out to our business community to
encourage green businesses. Specifically, we are taking the
following steps.
The City is using tax incentives to encourage green
businesses. In 2006, tax incentives to three businesses that
focus on recycling will result in almost 100 jobs and $20
million dollars in investment.
In 2006, the Mayor’s Green Team hosted the first Green
Business Conference. The conference was well attended, and
in 2007 there are plans for two more conferences, with one
focused on fleet issues.
The City intends to explore whether its business and/or
zoning codes include any impediments to green buildings.
This exploration will be done in conjunction with all
appropriate stakeholders. If impediments do exist, the City
will strive to remove them.
